6/19/1850:This is awful there is no more hope. Today the fugitive slave act was passed now even if we make it to the free land our masters can still come to the free land and bring us back to the plantation.
3/20/1852: I here there’s a new book coming out, I cant read but supposedly its revolutionary. All them white folks reading it. Its called Uncle Toms Cabin by Harriet Beecher. I here its making white people hate slavery this could turn out real well.
3/4/1853: Democrat Franklin Pierce is elected President over General Winfield Scott. William R. King is the Vice President. I hear being a democrat means your for slavery I don’t like the sound of this guy being in control it scares me.
9/24/1854: In Kansas they fight over slavery. I don’t know why but all of sudden white people are fighting other white people saying I should have rights and be able to be free. I here their calling it Bleeding Kansas.
5/21/1856: This is awful there has been so much blood shed in Kansas over slavery. I don’t want people to die only to be free. But today something I never would have expected to happen happened. Congressman Preston Brooks attacked Charles Sumner with a cane after Sumner had given a speech blaming the pro slavery forces for the violence in Kansas
2/15/1857: Hinton R. Helper publishes The Impending Crisis of the South a book on how slavery has impoverished Southern whites. The book is then banned in the southern states. This book being banned means the southern states are beginning to become frightened of the northern power. I hope soon the North does overpower the south and abolish slavery.
10/16/1859: A man named John Brown tries to lead a group of black and white men to fight the government. They were unsuccessful in this battle and lost their lives but their message of freedom carries on to the northern states rallying more and more people. While John Brown might have died he will go down in history as a hero.
3/4/1860: In his last message to Congress, President James Buchanan says that the southern states have no legal right to secede, yet neither does the Federal Government have the basis to prevent such an action. I don’t like how he says the government cant prevent it. If the government cant set my people free what can?
11/6/1860: I’m not sure who he is but my moma told me today was a happy day because President Abraham Lincoln is elected the sixteenth president of the United States. I don’t much follow politics but moma say he’s gong to make things better for us slaves all across the country.
12/20/1860: I here that South Carolina secedes from the United States today. Master say he thinking about seceding himself. Master say seceding means they not part of the country no more because they don’t like the laws that been passing.
8/10/1861: All hell has broken loose they are calling it the civil war a battle that will go down in history forever.
8/10/1865: The war is over Confederate general Robert E Lee has surrendered slavery is forever abolished in both the south and northern states.
8/10/1866: The war is over but racism is not. All plantations are not even free even though slavery is illegal.
